Coaching and consulting are really just different ways of people interacting or working together to achieve an outcome. The simplest way to think about it is a coach is like a ?facilitator? who is there to help you think about and lead your business. A consultant is like an extra pair of hands in the business.
Which One is Most Beneficial?
The timeframe you have to achieve your goals really determines whether you will get most benefit from coaching or consulting.
As a broad-brush guide if you have 6 months or more to achieve your goals and you have some spare personal time then we would encourage you to go the coaching route. A coaching style relationship maximises your opportunity to learn but progress is slower because you need to complete all the tasks and do the actual work. A coach will not help you complete tasks.
If you have to achieve the goals in the next 3 - 6 months and are time strapped then a consulting relationship will probably prove more beneficial. A consultant will not only help you with the planning and facilitate your thinking they will also roll up their sleeves and do the work. They will take responsibility for completing allocated tasks and report back to you when the job is done. Since the consultant is an extra pair of hands in the business goals are achieved quicker.
